Prime Minister Edi Rama described as an absurd example the detention of the mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj.
Prime Minister Rama compared the Veliaj case with 2 other cases in Hungary and Turkey, which according to him have been described as violations of human rights.
Rama also added that the capital cannot be run with the president in the cell and this, according to Rama, has damaged the work in Tirana.
“Tirana is an absurd example. There are 2 similar cases, one in Hungary and one in Turkey. Strasbourg dismissed both cases as a violation of human rights. For the elected mayor of the capital to remain in custody and not have any opportunity to replace him, because the Constitutional Court said ‘he is on duty’, this is absurd. The capital is suffering from a lack of direction. I see it in the reports with the municipality than It is impossible. The MPs of Tirana are very frustrated because you are in the governing majority, but on the other hand, the problems are related to the municipality. This is a political and economic experiment to run without a head. But I think that SPAK is one of the best things that has happened to Albania in these 35 years.
