“The San Marino-Israel Association looks with respect at the great tradition of hospitality of the Republic of San Marino. Neutrality, the defense of freedom and the ability to offer refuge to those fleeing war and persecution constitute one of the most noble and important pages of our history.
Precisely for this reason we believe that San Marino solidarity must be universal and non-selective.
The choice to focus attention today on the reception of Palestinian refugees is certainly understandable given the suffering of the civilian population. But we cannot forget the other immense tragedies that are taking place in the world, often almost with the indifference of public opinion and politics.
The case of Sudan is emblematic. The war that began in April 2023 has generated what the United Nations calls the world’s largest humanitarian and displacement crisis. According to UNHCR data updated to August 2026, approximately 11.3 million people are forcibly displaced, while some estimates reported by the United Nations speak of over 150,000 deaths since the start of the conflict. Why do these victims seem to occupy such a small space in the political debate?
The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is a tragedy that requires solutions, dialogue and responsibility. Too often, however, it is transformed by a certain policy into an instrument of identity and opposition, dividing public opinion into sides rather than concretely contributing to the search for peace. San Marino can do something different, something better. Our Republic, precisely because of its history, its size and its tradition of neutrality, should increasingly present itself as a meeting place between peoples, a space for dialogue and a territory in which Israelis and Palestinians, as well as representatives of other peoples involved in conflicts, can meet and discuss. Foreign policy should not serve to strengthen the identity of this or that political area. It should serve to build bridges, defend international law, protect civilian populations and promote every possible path to peace.
Welcoming those who suffer is right. But suffering has no nationality, religion or political affiliation.
If San Marino wants to be consistent with its history, its solidarity cannot be one-way and its neutrality must return to being an active instrument of dialogue”, concludes the San Marino-Israel Association.
