More than 100 Taiwanese Americans, Taiwanese legislators and representatives of civic organizations marched through central Manhattan in New York, United States, calling for Taiwan’s participation in the work of the United Nations. John Silk, the permanent representative of the Marshall Islands to the UN, joined the event, Taipei Times reports.
Participants chanted “UN for Taiwan” and “Keep Taiwan Free.” The march passed Times Square and Bryant Park and concluded near the New York Public Library. The annual event brought together representatives of Taiwanese community groups from the U.S. East Coast.
Support from the Marshall Islands
John Silk expressed hope that Taiwan would be able to participate in UN meetings as a member of the organization in the future. According to him, this goal is pursued by Taiwan, the Marshall Islands and the international community.
A delegation also arrived in New York that included Democratic Progressive Party legislator Wang Yichuan, Kuomintang legislator Yeh Yuan-chih and Taiwan People’s Party legislator Tsai Chun-chou. At the same time, the Taiwan United Nations Alliance stated that only Wang Yichuan took part in the march from beginning to end, while Yeh Yuan-chih and Tsai Chun-chou were absent.

Campaign during the General Assembly session
Wang Yichuan called the annual march an opportunity for Taiwan to make itself heard near UN headquarters. According to him, passersby stopped to take photos or record the procession on video, and gave participants a thumbs-up after hearing slogans in support of Taiwan.
The legislator said Taiwan is part of the international community and attracts global attention through its semiconductor and technology industries. He expressed hope that the campaign would help convey Taiwan’s voice to UN member states and ultimately facilitate its entry into the organization under its own name.
Taiwanese authorities are also holding promotional events in New York during the current session of the UN General Assembly. Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it would continue seeking international support for Taiwan’s participation in the activities of the UN and its affiliated organizations.
