Minister of Education Francis Fonseca confirmed today that More Tomorrow Primary School will remain open. But for how much longer?
Uncertainty continues to keep parents of the school’s roughly 30 students, enrolled from Infant One through Standard Six, on edge.
“We have employed another teacher, so there’s another teacher there now,” Fonseca told News 5. He added that the Ministry plans to eventually raise the number of teachers to three, up from two, one of whom already serves as principal.
Fonseca said the latest discussions have produced a plan to address the immediate challenges, but he cautioned that the long-term viability of the school remains under review.
“I continue to insist that we have to look at the long-term plans. Whether or not it is sustainable to keep that school there, it still remains a question. So we’ll continue to look at that,” Fonseca said.
The minister’s comments come just over a week after the Ministry said no decision had been made to close More Tomorrow Primary School. Reports at the time indicated that education officials were considering several options, including providing transportation for students to a nearby school if maintaining the school proved difficult.
Meanwhile, Village Chairman Michael Myvette has said the council is prepared to support efforts to keep the school running.
