In the Roseau North by-election in Dominica in September 2026, preliminary figures showed:
- Registered electors: 7,489
- Ballots cast: 2,595
- Spoilt ballots: 15
- Rejected ballots: 41
Valid votes were:
- Ashma McDougal: 1,506
- Danny Lugay: 983
- Sherman “Donty” Boston: 50
Turnout was approximately 34.65%, meaning about 65.35% of registered electors did not vote.
Although the winner secured a clear plurality, the low turnout highlights the need for greater civic engagement. Democracy depends not only on voting, but also on citizens remaining informed, organized, vigilant, and involved between elections.
As emphasized in my essay “Aim High,” published in Dominica News Online, citizens must question those in authority, defend constitutional principles, participate in community organizations, and contribute to national development. Young people, in particular, should be encouraged to understand their civic rights and responsibilities and to help shape the country’s future.
The Roseau North turnout is therefore more than a statistic. It is a warning about civic disengagement and a reminder that Dominica’s democratic future depends on sustained, informed participation.
