AS PART of the commemoration of the IX Inter-American Week of Indigenous Peoples ( August 10 to 14, 2026), the OAS General Secretariats in The Bahamas, Dominica, Saint Lucia and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines came together on Thursday, August 13, 2026, to host a Virtual Heritage Expo.
Held under the theme: “Roots That Sustain. Knowledge That Transforms,” the virtual event reflected a collaborative effort among the various secretariats.
In her opening remarks, Berthia Nickson from the OAS Secretariat, St Lucia, pointed out that through this partnership, they seek to celebrate and recognise the enduring presence, resilience, and invaluable contributions of indigenous peoples within this hemisphere.
Nickson pointed out that while the Bahamas does not currently have a recognised indigenous population, the other member states continue to be home to vibrant indigenous communities whose traditions, craftsmanship, artistic expressions, cultural practices, and culinary heritage enrich the cultural landscape of the region.
