A NUMBER OF stand-out individual performances were recorded as the 24th annual Bequia Basketball Tournament continued last weekend.
Matches were played from Friday, August 14 through Sunday, August 16, as teams battled across the Under-12, Under-16, Second Division and First Division categories of the tournament, a release from the Bequia Basketball Association (BBA) stated.
Apart from the stand-out individual performances, the BBA said the weekend produced several hard-fought contests and important victories.
On Friday, August 14 in the Under-12 Division Grinches cruised past Falcons 16-2, with Zende Lorraine leading the Grinches scoring 8 points.
In another Under-12 match-up, Ninjas defeated Seagulls 4-2, with Chase Kydd accounting for all four of Ninjas’ points.
Golden Knights continued their strong run in the Under-16 Division, defeating Hornets 23-10.
Shyanna King led Golden Knights with 9 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 blocks. For Hornets, River Hackshaw finished with 5 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist and an impressive 7 steals. On Saturday, August 15 Grinches returned to action in the Under-12 Division and again defeated Falcons, this time 18-11.
Lorraine once again led Grinches with 8 points, while Kenolyi Ollivierre led Falcons with 6 points.
Golden Knights produced one of the weekend’s most dominant performances, overwhelming the Rising Stars 97-39 in the Under-16 Division. Captain, Kenjay Phillips led Golden Knights with 28 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals.
Shaquille Primus was the leading scorer for Rising Stars with 17 points, 4 rebounds and 1 steal.
Sunday’s schedule featured a series of competitive match-ups, including an important First Division clash between the defending champions and Smokin’ Aces.
In the Under-16 Division, Hornets edged the Titans 23-20, resulting in their first win of the tournament. Tevaughn Llyod led Hornets with 11 points, 9 rebounds, 2 steals and 5 blocks; while Ray Joseph paced Titans with 14 points, 6 rebounds, 4 steals and 2 blocks.
The Second Division saw Apex Elite defeat Rising Stars 82-54.
Despite the final margin, Rising Stars showed considerable fight and went into the second half with a six-point lead.
However, their challenge became increasingly difficult after being reduced to just four players during the final quarter, allowing Apex Elite to take control and secure the victory. Jomain Ollivierre was outstanding for Apex Elite, recording 25 points, 14 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal and 5 blocks. Rising Stars’ Shaquille Primus delivered a huge offensive performance with 33 points, 8 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 block. Rising Stars have struggled thus far in the tournament, but Sunday’s performance demonstrated the team’s determination and potential as they continue their campaign, the BBA said.
In the First Division, Court Kings secured their first victory of the tournament with a narrow 60-57 win over the Smokin’ Aces.
The result was particularly significant for Court Kings, who entered the competition as the defending champions but had struggled to find their rhythm during the early stages of this year’s tournament.
They came out strong on Sunday and showed the form that made them champions last season.
Solomon Joe led Court Kings with 17 points and 6 rebounds, while Elroy Joseph was the leading scorer for Smokin’ Aces with 25 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 5 steals.
Smokin’ Aces remained within striking distance throughout the contest, but Joseph fouled out in the final few minutes, leaving his team without its leading scorer during the crucial closing moments. Court Kings held on to secure the three-point victory.
The tournament continues on Wednesday, August 19, 2026 with four games scheduled at the Clive Tannis Hard Court:
● U-12 Division: Seagulls vs.
Falcons; and Ninjas vs. Grinches.
● Second Division: Golden Knights vs. Apex Elite- completing a previously rained-out game with 10 minutes remaining.
● First Division: East Blazers vs. Smokin’ Aces.
