Award-winning actress, singer, and activist Jenifer Lewis has arrived in Barbados for the island’s Season of Emancipation celebrations, delivering an impassioned message of resilience, heritage, and unity as part of Marcus Garvey Day celebrations.
The iconic stage and screen star, whose credits include Black-ish, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and In Living Color, opened up to local media about her decision to join the national observance, citing a deep sense of connection to the Caribbean and the global Black diaspora.
“I said yes right away,” Lewis shared, describing her overwhelming gratitude for the warm island welcome. “I feel home; I really do. The warmth, the arms that have held me so far… I’m just so grateful.”
Organised by the National Cultural Foundation (NCF) and the Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. (BTMI), the events form part of the island’s broader emancipation celebrations, which run from April through August. Lewis’ visit aligns with efforts to engage the African diaspora, honour civil rights history, and foster discussions on empowerment, reparations, and cultural excellence.
Addressing the media with her signature energy and candour, the veteran actress reflected on the duty of contemporary leaders and artists to stand resilient amid modern societal and political pressures.
Drawing strength from historical figures, Lewis emphasised that fear cannot dictate the path forward for the diaspora. “Harriet didn’t teach us to sit down. She didn’t teach us to be afraid,” Lewis stated, invoking the legacy of Harriet Tubman. “I didn’t come all the way from Los Angeles to tiptoe with you. I came to let you know what we’re going through and how I hope.”
Lewis, who has long been open about her personal journey with mental health and her recovery from a severe fall in Africa, also spoke candidly about self-care, longevity, and preserving one’s inner drive.
She urged younger generations to find balance while pursuing social change. “For me, grace is the space between breaths that compels us to move forward,” Lewis explained. “We all have that light. Mine has never gone out, even when I was in deep depression. I refuse to let the light die.”
Lewis is set to engage directly with Barbadian youth in sessions aimed at mentorship and creative inspiration, explaining that her primary mission is to connect with the next generation. “I don’t go anywhere in the world without saying, ‘Take me to the children,’” Lewis noted. “That’s who you want to get to. You have to know who you are to make any real change.” She is set to have a youth engagement activity at the Frank Collymore Hall on Tuesday.
The legendary performer will also share the stage during the week’s proceedings with Dr Julius Garvey, son of the late Pan-African leader Marcus Garvey, alongside NCF officials.
Beyond her official engagements, Lewis expressed excitement about immersing herself in Barbadian culture, from visiting local historical sites and botanical gardens to sampling traditional cuisine before returning to the US.
