The PUP’s Corozal mayoral convention is underway today, with three-term Mayor Rigoberto Vellos facing Shajerie Rogers for the party’s mayoral candidacy.
Vellos is seeking another term with councillor candidates Hugo Gonzalez, Miguel Montalov, Rodolfa Narvaez, Baldemar Pech Jr., Otoniel Riveroll and Marleni Tapia.
Meanwhile, Rogers is running with Hilberto Clarke, Hiram Riveroll, Victoria Riveroll, Leslie Rodriguez and Lizbeth Ucan.
Ahead of today’s convention, Rogers said her team “have walked our streets, visited your homes, listened to your concerns, and shared our commitments to improving our beautiful Corozal Town.” Today she says she’s ready for the people’s decision.
Vellos, meanwhile, said this morning that he was pleased to see Corozaleños coming out to make their voices heard. He described today as an important day and remained confident that he and his slate would secure another victory.
The convention comes after weeks of political tension surrounding the Corozal contest. As reported on Friday, Vellos had accused opponents of attempting to “sabotage” his council and said projects involving the council and Central Government had been delayed. Reports also indicate that Corozal Bay Area Representative Thea Ramirez is strongly backing Rogers.
