A National Sports Hall of Fame, a commemorative stamp and a national holiday in honour of Sir Garfield Sobers are among proposals being advanced to preserve the National Hero’s legacy, Minister of Sport Charles Griffith told Parliament on Friday.
Griffith said the proposed Hall of Fame would give Barbadians and visitors an opportunity to explore the achievements of the island’s sporting greats through interactive exhibits, including QR codes linking to information on Sir Garfield and other national sporting heroes.
“I believe that the time is right for us to be able to have that Hall of Fame on the landscape in this country,” Griffith said.

“Visitors who come to this island should be able to go into that Hall of Fame and scan a QR code and be able to get all of the information in relation to Sir Garfield, all of the information in relation to our sporting heroes on island.”
Griffith also suggested that July 28, Sir Garfield’s birthday, become a national holiday to ensure younger generations understand the significance of the man widely regarded as cricket’s greatest all-rounder.
“Every little boy… who on the 28th asks, ‘What is this holiday about?’, will be able to get a story in terms of why we’re celebrating Sir Garfield’s birthday.”
The minister further proposed the introduction of a commemorative stamp bearing Sir Garfield’s image, saying it would not only honour the National Hero but could also generate funding to assist promising young athletes.
He suggested proceeds from the sale of the stamps could support aspiring sportsmen and women who require assistance purchasing equipment or accessing opportunities to develop their talents.
Griffith’s proposals came as Parliament reflected on the life and legacy of Sir Garfield, whose death last month prompted an outpouring of tributes from Barbados, the Caribbean and the wider cricketing world.
Describing Sobers as the undisputed “GOAT” – the greatest of all time – Griffith said the cricket icon embodied every quality associated with sporting greatness, including exceptional performance, consistency, leadership, resilience, adaptability, sportsmanship and longevity.
“There’s a template that he left on this rock in relation to sportsmen and how they should traverse that journey in sports.”
The sports minister recalled one of his first official duties was visiting Sir Garfield at his home to seek his blessing to revive the cricket tournament bearing his name.
While admitting he was initially intimidated by the large dog at the entrance to the property, Griffith said what stayed with him most was the humility of a man whose achievements had earned him worldwide acclaim.
“I was struck by the fact of how humble this man was,” he said.
Reflecting on Sir Garfield’s willingness to mentor younger cricketers, including West Indies batting great Brian Lara, Griffith said the National Hero never treated his knowledge as something to be guarded:
“He was prepared to share that knowledge to better some of our cricketers who also reached the international level, and I think that that is the hallmark of a man who understood that he was able to climb the ladder and wasn’t going to kick it down.”
Griffith also highlighted the government’s ongoing investment in sports infrastructure, noting that more than $50 million had been spent on facilities across the island. He mentioned the Herman Griffith Primary Schools Cricket Competition, talent identification programmes and the development of the Sports Council complex at Blenheim, where practice pitches, bowling machines and video technology are being installed to help nurture the next generation of cricketers.
Using the cricketing icon as inspiration, the minister said: “I want our youngsters on the island who are involved, not only in cricket, but other areas of sports to see what is possible in relation to dedication, what is possible if you believe in yourself [and] what can happen at the end of the day.”
