Media Symposium and Reception In Barbados

The Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, through its Embassy in Barbados, has highlighted to regional journalists several major development initiatives in Barbados in which it is currently involved.
The information was provided at a Media Symposium and Reception hosted by the Chinese Embassy on Friday, July 24, 2026, at the Ambassador’s Residence in Christ Church, Barbados.
Held under the theme “A Friend in Need and a Partner in Deed,” the symposium highlighted China’s continued partnership with Barbados through projects focused on water security, agriculture, climate resilience and sustainable development. Among the key presentations was an update on the South Coast Water Reclamation Project, being undertaken by the China Railway Shanghai Engineering Group (CRSEG).
Speaking during the symposium, Project Manager Wu Rongsen described the initiative as one of significant importance to Barbados, noting that the island’s limited freshwater resources make water conservation and reuse increasingly critical.
“The project is an investment of about US $66million and will be delivered over the next three years.”
It is intended to modernize the island’s existing wastewater treatment infrastructure while introducing advanced water reclamation technology.
“The project is supposed to upgrade the existing wastewater treatment plant while also building an advanced treatment system that will clean waste water to a much higher standard,” the project manager explained.
He said technology will be used to clean it so it can be used again for irrigation, ground water recharge, and other non-potable purposes.
“We’re assisting Barbados to better prepare for climate change, and create a more sustainable future for generations,” Wu added.
The South Coast Water Reclamation Project is expected to strengthen Barbados’ long-term water resilience by increasing the availability of reclaimed water for agricultural, industrial and environmental uses while reducing pressure on the country’s limited freshwater supplies. Wu said he hopes the initiative will ultimately be remembered for more than its engineering achievements. “In the future, I hope people won’t look back at the project as just a new treatment plant but as a symbol of friendship between China and Barbados.”
Another major initiative highlighted during the symposium was the Mechanized Upland Rice Demonstration Planting Project, which seeks to improve Barbados’ food security through the introduction of drought-resistant rice varieties and modern farming techniques. Speaking on the project, the Manager of Human Linshi Agricultural Development, Wang Jian said Barbados faces two longstanding challenges- water scarcity and a heavy dependence on imported food. He explained that these realities formed the basis of the agricultural partnership between the two countries.
“That is our core motivation for China and Barbados partnering and launching the upland rice cooperation,” Jian outlined.
“Our goal is to deploy drought-resistant, high yield seeds to unlock the potential of local dry lands and sloping fields, help Barbados develop domestic grain production and safeguard its food autonomy,” he also stated.
Wang explained that the Chinese technical team has moved away from the conventional flooded rice cultivation method traditionally associated with rice production.
“We have continuously collected growth data, refined planting protocols, and developed a cultivation system tailored to local conditions enabling these tiny upland rice seeds to take root, grow and deliver stable yields in Barbados,” said Wang, while noting that the initiative is an example of practical cooperation between the two countries.
“The project stands today as a vivid model of pragmatic China-Barbados cooperation,” he commented, “It is a landmark project embodying bilateral friendship.”
Wang also announced that the programme will include ongoing agricultural training designed to build local capacity and equip farmers with the knowledge needed to sustain the initiative over the long term.
“With tangible achievements we will protect food security, improve people’s livelihoods and write a new chapter of long-term friendship and mutual benefit between Barbados and China.”
The symposium formed part of the Chinese Embassy’s engagement with regional media and provided journalists with an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of China’s development cooperation in Barbados and other Caribbean nations.
