Two families are mourning tonight after separate drowning incidents claimed the lives of two men on Sunday. In Belmopan, thirty-eight-year-old Rudy Toj was found motionless in a creek in the San Martin area. In Orange Walk, forty-four-year-old Luciano Acosta never made it back from a fishing trip after a canoe reportedly overturned at Honey Camp Lagoon. Police are now looking into both incidents. ASP Stacy Smith tells us more.

“Police are investigating the apparent drowning of thirty-eight-year-old Rudy Bernabe Toj, a Guatemalan national of Otoxha Street, Belmopan City, which occurred on Sunday, second August twenty twenty-six. The investigation commenced at around seven-thirty a.m. on the mentioned date when officers were called to a creek in the San Martin area of Belmopan City. The investigators reported that upon their arrival, they observed the motionless body of Toj and efforts were made to resuscitate him. However, they proved futile. Also observed on the scene was a transparent bottle containing alcohol, which is believed was consumed by Toj before he entered the water. Police are investigating the apparent drowning of forty-four-year-old Luciano Acosta of Orange Walk Town, which occurred on Sunday, second August. The investigation commenced at around eight thirty a.m, on the aforementioned date when investigators were called to the Honey Camp Lagoon area in Orange Walk Town. At this location, they encountered the unresponsive body of Moh [Acosta], which was partially submerged among a mangrove patch. What the investigators have established so far is that Moh [Acosta] was along with friends and family members, and they had gone on an outing in the Honey Camp Lagoon area on Saturday, August first, and sometime at around three o’clock am on the second of August, he and another male person entered a canoe and went on a fishing trip. It is reported that the canoe that they were in reportedly capsized, and whilst the other male person was able to swim to a mangrove patch and was subsequently rescued, Mr. Acosta was not found until a few hours later in the stated location.”
Both bodies now await a post-mortem examination.
