Mangroves are among Palau’s most valuable natural defenses, protecting coastlines, supporting fisheries and storing carbon. Ahead of World Mangrove Day, residents of Ngiwal gathered with conservation partners to learn why safeguarding these coastal forests is essential for the nation’s future.

NGIWAL, Palau — Residents of Ngiwal and government partners gathered this week ahead of World Mangrove Day to highlight the critical role mangrove ecosystems play in protecting Palau’s coastal communities, supporting fisheries and helping combat climate change.
The community event, organized by the Palau International Coral Reef Center (PICRC) in partnership with the Palau Earth Day Committee, brought together 31 participants to discuss the ecological and cultural importance of mangroves in Ngiwal.
Rich MacKenzie of the Office of Climate Change said mangrove forests serve as nurseries for reef fish, protect shorelines from typhoons and coastal erosion, and improve water quality by filtering sediments before they reach coral reefs.
Another presentation examined how climate change could affect Palau under different greenhouse gas emission scenarios. Participants learned about potential changes in sea surface temperatures, sea-level rise, typhoon activity and marine heat waves. The presentation also emphasized that mangroves are a natural climate solution because they store significant amounts of carbon, helping reduce greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
Following the presentations, residents participated in a community dialogue, sharing observations, questions and traditional knowledge about local mangrove ecosystems. Organizers said the discussion underscored the importance of incorporating community knowledge into future conservation and climate adaptation planning.
PICRC thanked the Ngiwal State Government, participants and the Palau Earth Day Committee for supporting the event and encouraged the public to join a mangrove cleanup in Ngiwal on Saturday, July 25, as part of World Mangrove Day activities.
Organizers said the event reinforced a simple but important message: mangroves are far more than trees along the shoreline. They sustain fisheries, safeguard coastal communities from storms and erosion, improve water quality and strengthen Palau’s resilience to a changing climate.
