A power struggle is unfolding inside world football, and Concacaf is drawing a hard line. The confederation and its forty-one member associations have rejected a proposal backed by FIFA President Gianni Infantino that would allow private investors to buy into the FIFA World Cup. Concacaf says the idea raised serious concerns about transparency, governance, and who should control the future of the sport’s biggest tournament. Member nations met today and made their position official in a press release. News Five spoke with Football Federation of Belize President Sergio Chuc about what this means for Belize and the wider football region.

“The organization is strong enough. There are enough reserves to put this same offer to all members without having to raise funds from any equity funds out there or mutual funds. I know that we keep a close relation with our Concacaf council and I could safely say here that the Concacaf council members who sit on the FIFA board did not know about this development. We were quite surprised and that is not the channel the Concacaf follows. Over the last decade we have worked tirelessly to change the Concacaf image and don’t go back to those dark days and we have set certain standards and values that our members follow, our council follow and we at Concacaf would not operate that way.”
On the other hand, the EUFA has threatened to boycott the next World Cup if FIFA moves ahead with the proposed plan.
