How Haley Stevens’s Accent Became a Flashpoint in Michigan’s Senate Race

How Haley Stevens’s Accent Became a Flashpoint in Michigan’s Senate Race

Haley Stevens had heard quite enough from people who had heard quite enough of Haley Stevens.

“There’s those cool kids on the internet,” Ms. Stevens, a four-term Michigan congresswoman, said last week, rubbing her hands together at a rally for her Democratic Senate primary campaign, bobbing in a denim jacket with the sleeves rolled up. “They’re doin’ the cool kid chyaahhter.”

That chatter — the stuff of “coastal elites,” she insisted — had centered on how she chatters. Some skeptics of Ms. Stevens, locally and nationally, heard the exaggerated Midwestern twang of a schlocky “Saturday Night Live” impersonation, with its raised a’s and disappearing g’s and someone-just-sat-on-the-remote fluctuations in volume and cadence, as if curated to project something endearingly zany.

Ms. Stevens and her supporters heard something else.

“They’re makin’ fun of Michigan,” she said. “They’re thinkin’ they’re better than us. And what they don’t know is: I am your voice.”

Next week, primary voters will have their say about that. In the interim, the matter of Ms. Stevens’s voice — maligned, celebrated, dissected by linguists, forensically compared to past clips in which she maybe sounds a little bit different or maybe not so much — has become a proxy for a good deal more in the endless debate over what authenticity means and who gets to define it.

Is another accomplished female candidate really being made to defend her vocal intentions after years of focus group panels whose dismissive adjectives about women officeseekers (“shrill,” “bossy,” “cold”) were often seen as cover for unsubtle misogyny?

In a season when Democrats for a time embraced an undervetted Maine oysterman as their Senate pick — in no small part because admirers (and operatives) loved the sea-salted gravel in his voice — what makes certain regional sounds echo differently than others?

And in this particular contest, why is a homespun white woman being cast as any more quintessentially Michigan in 2026 than, say, a progressive Muslim doctor like her primary opponent, Abdul El-Sayed?

“It does seem to be, whether intentionally or subconsciously, a kind of ‘I am one of you, and he is not’ tactic,” Amanda Litman, the president of Run for Something, a group that recruits young progressive candidates, said of Ms. Stevens. “But also, criticizing the way a woman speaks is sexist. All of that is true!”

In modern American politics, the list of politicians whose supporters find them relatable is long and varied: a rich-guy president with a weakness for gold trim and a white-haired socialist from Vermont; a hockey mom from Alaska and a former bartender from the Bronx.

One voter’s authenticity will always be another’s trying-too-hard.

But rarely has the subtext of how it feels to hear a candidate speak been so explicitly elevated to text-text in a campaign’s final frames.

The attention escalated this month, when a 19-second clip of Ms. Stevens in Ecorse, Mich., set the political internet aflame.

“I’m gonna be doin’ it with a little bit of joy, a little bit of enthusiasm, a little bit of energy and a little bit of stick-it-to-’em!” she told voters, smacking her own open palm on the punchline. “Because that’s the Michigan way!”

Reactions ranged from searing mockery to conspicuous glee among ideological foes.

“How is this not a character from parks & rec?” Meghan McCain, the conservative commentator, posted on X, invoking the television comedy about the eccentrics of a local Indiana government.

“Bad Chris Farley impression?” wrote Kaelan Dorr, a White House aide. “My culture is not your costume, lady.”

TMZ later caught up with Ms. Stevens on Capitol Hill, where she appraised herself as “authentically Michigan.”

“You know who I sound like?” she said. “I sound like the people who I talk to in Michigan who are gettin’ screwed right now by Donald Trump.”

She released an ad to reinforce the theme (“I’m proud to fight for — and sound like — Michigan!”) and printed “Stick It To ’Em” yard signs.

By then, the primary had grown vicious enough that Dr. El-Sayed — who in June said pointedly of Ms. Stevens that political money “can’t even buy you a personality” — felt compelled to address the social media venom directly. “It’s become impossible to ignore the way that people online make fun of my opponent for things that have nothing to do with her policies or politics,” he said in a statement, calling this behavior unkind and unhelpful. “If you support me, please stop.”

This did not dissuade Ms. Stevens’s detractors from noting, accurately, that her campaign has been boosted by heavy spending from groups outside Michigan, particularly the American Israel Public Affairs Committee — and that her line about “cool kids” from the coasts was delivered with an out-of-state endorser, Representative James Clyburn of South Carolina, in the camera shot.

Some have also spread mischievous rumors that the accent itself might have been imported from somewhere nefarious, like Wisconsin. (Ms. Stevens was born and raised in Oakland County, Mich., north of Detroit. She was a chief of staff for the Obama administration’s auto task force and speaks fondly of the Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme she drove in high school.)

As an academic matter, Ms. Stevens does appear to have accent science on her side.

“I will give it my sociolinguist stamp,” said Betsy Sneller, an associate professor of linguistics at Michigan State University whose research has tracked how language has evolved across the state. “She definitely has a classic Michigan accent.”

Aural giveaways include what is known as the Northern Cities Vowel Shift and examples of “Canadian raising” (also found in parts of the United States), which Dr. Sneller identified in Ms. Stevens’s delivery of words like “tireless” and “fighter.”

Ms. Stevens’s inflections might be unfamiliar to Michigan transplants, Dr. Sneller suggested, because “she kind of sounds like a boomer from a suburban area.” (Ms. Stevens is 43 but seems to approach her vowels with the sensibility of an older soul.)

And if the accent affair has amplified some thorny political questions — for Democrats, women candidates, denizens of the internet — it can be said that one constituency is enjoying itself.

“This,” Dr. Sneller said, “is the stuff of dialectologists’ joy.”
