LEADER OFTHE OPPOSITION Dr. Ralph Gonsalves, has been invited to serve as a member of the Global Advisory Council on Reparatory Justice by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Republic of Ghana.
The letter written by Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, states that Dr Gonsalves had been invited in recognition of “Your Excellency’s distinguished statesmanship, longstanding contribution to Caribbean integration and unwavering advocacy for preparatory justice, it is my honour to invite you to serve as a Member of the Global Advisory Council on Reparatory Justice.
“Your leadership and experience would make an invaluable contribution to the work of the Council and help strengthen the political leadership, strategic direction and international partnerships required to advance the implementation of the Resolution.”
Dr Gonsalves attended the high-level Consultative Conference on the Next Steps, which followed the adoption of the United Nations General Assembly Resolution A/RES/80/250 on the Trafficking of enslaved Africans and Racialised Chattel Enslavement of Africans, which was held in Accra, Ghana, from June 17 – 19, 2026.
The deliberations at that meeting culminated in the adoption of the Accra Next Steps Commitment, which provided a strategic framework for strengthening transcontinental cooperation, and advancing a coordinated programme of action in support of reparatory justice for Africans and people of African descent.
Additionally, one of the key decisions reflected in the Accra Next Steps Commitments was the establishment of a Global Advisory Council on Reparatory Justice, as a high level body of current and former Heads of State and Government,
and other eminent personalities to provide strategic leadership and political guidance for the advancement of the global reparatory justice agenda.
The Council is intended to guide the implementation of the United Nations Resolution, strengthen cooperation among Africa, the African diaspora and partner institutions, and promote a coordinated approach to reparatory justice.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Ghana will serve as the Council’s secretariat.
