    Editorial…

(Kaieteur News) – For decades, Guyana’s Indigenous people have been asked to wait. Wait for proper roads. Wait for reliable healthcare. Wait for quality education. Wait for safe transportation. Wait for the development that successive governments promised but rarely delivered.

Today, after the horrific sinking of the MV Barima, that wait has become a death sentence for dozens of families.

The tragedy has ripped away the carefully crafted narrative of development in the hinterland that the government likes to boast about.

It has exposed a painful truth that no amount of government advertising can conceal: while Guyana has become one of the fastest-growing economies in the world, too many Indigenous communities remain trapped in conditions that belong to another century.

WIN Member of Parliament Dawn Hastings-Williams, herself an Indigenous woman, articulated what countless hinterland residents have lived with for generations. There has never been a comprehensive review of transportation services connecting the hinterland to the coast. That is an astonishing indictment in a country earning billions from oil.

The contrast is impossible to ignore.

Guyana can finance gleaming highways, hotels, stadiums and monumental infrastructure projects. It can boast about economic growth figures that attract international applause. Yet the citizens living in Regions One, Seven, Eight and Nine are still forced to risk their lives aboard ageing vessels because affordable alternatives scarcely exist.

Flights remain prohibitively expensive for ordinary families. River transport is not a choice; it is a necessity.

When necessity becomes dangerous, government has failed in one of its most basic obligations.

For years, passengers reportedly travelled on the MV Barima sleeping in hammocks strung between railings or on cardboard spread across the deck. Such scenes would be unimaginable on transportation serving the coastal population. Yet they became normal for hinterland residents because society gradually accepted that Indigenous communities deserve less.

That acceptance is perhaps the greatest injustice.

The MV Barima disaster is about an entire system that has tolerated lower standards whenever the victims happen to live far from Georgetown.

The Mahdia dormitory fire should have been the moment the nation resolved never again to allow Indigenous communities to suffer because of institutional neglect. Instead, another national tragedy has unfolded, again claiming a disproportionate number of Indigenous lives.

How many painful lessons must these communities endure before meaningful reforms replace official condolences?

The disturbing discrepancies surrounding the passenger manifest have only deepened public concern. Families still struggle to determine exactly who boarded the vessel. Questions continue to surround compliance with maritime regulations, passenger registration procedures and emergency preparedness.

In any maritime disaster, accurate passenger records can mean the difference between hope and despair for grieving relatives. The apparent failure of these basic safeguards speaks to a culture where rules are treated as optional until catastrophe strikes.

The concerns extend beyond the vessel itself.

If, as publicly acknowledged, the ferry required significant mechanical attention before returning to service, then difficult questions must be answered about who authorised its continued operation and whether public safety was subordinated to operational convenience.

Those answers cannot emerge from carefully choreographed press conferences or internal reviews designed to shield political embarrassment.

They require an independent, transparent investigation that follows the evidence wherever it leads.

The MV Barima tragedy must become the catalyst for a complete transformation of hinterland transportation. Guyana’s oil wealth should guarantee modern ferries built to international standards, rigorous inspection regimes, professionally trained crews, comprehensive emergency response systems and affordable air links for remote communities.

    These are not extravagant demands.

They are the minimum expectations citizens should have in a country blessed with unprecedented natural wealth.

The nation must also recognise that recovery does not end when the final body is found. Survivors, children, grieving parents and entire communities will carry psychological scars for years. Long-term trauma counselling cannot be treated as an afterthought.

The Indigenous people of Guyana have contributed enormously to the nation’s history, culture and stewardship of its forests. They should never have to question whether their lives are valued less because they live beyond the coastland
