The public has been advised that the Massy Stores branch on French Street, Woodbrook, will open from noon today following a reported break-in at the company’s warehouse and the discovery of a body in a vacant lot nearby.
According to reports, officers attached to Allied Security were alerted around 2:49 a.m. that several suspects had broken into the Massy Stores warehouse.
When police responded, they found a hole in the warehouse’s northern wall. Preliminary investigations indicate the suspects gained access through an abandoned property on Robert Street, Woodbrook.
Officers later found several boxes containing bottles of wine scattered across the abandoned compound. While searching the area, they discovered the body of an East Indian man beneath an open makeshift wooden structure.
The victim was identified as Peter Seemungal.
Residents told police that Seemungal was homeless and had been staying at the abandoned property.
Investigators found that Seemungal’s hands had been tied behind his back and his feet were bound. A black jersey was wrapped around his neck, and police believe he was strangled, as there were no visible gunshot or stab wounds on the body.
Massy Stores Manager Natalie Owen was notified of the break-in and said a comprehensive inventory would be conducted to determine what items, if any, were stolen.
