Minister of Education Phillip Jackson, has given the assurance that the government will make the necessary provisions for schools to bridge the deficit gap after the removal of registration fees for all public and government-assisted secondary schools starting this September 2026.
Speaking on Nice Radio on July 22, 2026, Minister Jackson addressed the public scrutiny that the government has been facing since the announcement about the cancellation of the tuition/registration fee was made on July 15, 2026.
Jackson, insisting that there was consultation, acknowledged that the basic issue surrounding removing the fees is that schools will lose some revenue, and that the public wants to be assured that the Ministry of Education will step in to provide the supplies that schools need.
“So those are some of the main issues that they had, and I give them my commitment that we’ll make the necessary provision to ensure that the operational costs of the schools for which we’re responsible…they are taken care of, and we will do that.”
He reminded the public that a circular was sent out on July 14, 2026, where the government communicated that the decision was based on the Education Act No. 34 of 2006, and the New Democratic Party’s policy about fees.
