PARAMARIBO — During a parent meeting in the multifunctional center in Sophia’sLust, organized by the Ministry of Youth Development and Sports, parents expressed their appreciation for the GRO program (Growth towards Development). They indicated that they are already seeing positive changes in their children’s behavior, motivation and school performance since participating in the program.
In addition to these positive experiences, the parents also highlighted their own development needs. They expressed the wish to follow training and workshops that not only promote their personal development, but also contribute to a stronger and more stable family life. This included training in the areas of ICT, bread and snack preparation, textile processing, parenting support and family planning.
“The ministry considers the active involvement of parents as an indispensable pillar for the success of the GRO program”
Milton Tuart, acting deputy director of Youth Centres, spoke to parents on behalf of the Ministry of Youth Development and Sport about the further development of the program. An important topic that emerged was its future sustainability GRO program. The parents emphasized that the program makes a major contribution to the development of children and young people. They expressed the wish that it would have a sustainable character. According to them, the GRO program should be preserved for future generations and not depend on political changes.
The program is an integrated youth development program of the Ministry of Youth Development and Sports that focuses on the personal, social and societal development of children and young people. Through after-school activities, talent development, social skills training, parental involvement and holiday programs, the program offers young people the opportunity to discover their talents, strengthen self-confidence and develop into responsible and independent citizens.
The ministry considers the active involvement of parents as an indispensable pillar for the success of the GRO program. By working together with parents, schools, social organizations and other partners, we build a strong foundation in which children and young people can optimally grow, learn and shape their future.
