“This dish boosts the production and consumption of potatoes, vegetables for salad and purple corn for chicha that usually accompanies this and other preparations. It contributes around 2% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), contributing significantly to the national economy,” said the Minister of Production, César Quispe Luján.
According to the PRODUCEmpresarial Observatory, around 14,000 chicken shops operate in the country. In addition, more than 159 million grilled chickens are consumed per year in Peru, highlighting its relevance in family gatherings and celebrations.
On average, 987,000 grilled chickens are consumed every Sunday. More than half of this figure is tasted in Lima. Likewise, the average expense of a family of four people visiting chicken shops is S/80.
It should be noted that, according to the Ministry of Production, grilled chicken is one of the best-selling and most popular dishes in Peru, followed by Chifa and ceviche.
Peruvian grilled chicken has become an international franchise, expanding in countries such as Argentina, Venezuela, Chile, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Ecuador, Spain, Japan, China, the United Arab Emirates and the United States.
In terms of workforce, the sector in Peru generates 135,000 direct jobs and 405,000 indirect jobs.
