The Attorney General’s Office announced this Monday an investigation into the Yare III prison, located in the state of Miranda, after relatives and NGOs reported an “irregular situation” in the facility and the suspension of visits to their loved ones.
“The Public Ministry reports the beginning of an investigation after the events recorded this Monday, April 20 at the Yare III Penitentiary Center,” he said in a brief statement without detailing what happened.
He added that he appointed a commission to “clarify what happened and guarantee the rights of the population deprived of liberty” in this prison.
According to the NGO Venezuelan Prison Observatory (OVP), the Yare III authorities suspended, without any explanation, the visit of relatives this Monday and only allowed the entry of food and items for personal use.
The situation generated, says the OVP in X, rumors of “alleged transfers or an alleged mutiny”, after the presence of ambulances was supposedly reported.
«The misinformation of the Delcy Rodríguez regime is recurrent and causes relatives to remain in anxiety (…). “This is also torture towards the loved ones of those deprived of liberty,” added the OVP, which published a video of family members gathered outside the prison during the morning shouting: “We want a visit!”
The NGO also warned that the suspension of visits without just cause and the lack of information constitute a violation of “international human rights standards.”
