According to official listings from Washington, Rudolph Bauer of South Carolina has been nominated to serve as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States to Belize. The nomination now heads to the Senate, where it must undergo hearings and secure confirmation before the appointment becomes official.

Under U.S. law, ambassadorial nominees are reviewed by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, which evaluates their qualifications before sending the nomination to the full Senate for a final vote. Only after approval can the nominee be sworn in and assume duties in Belmopan.
Bauer’s nomination comes as Belize has again been without a Senate-confirmed U.S. ambassador, with diplomatic affairs being managed by a Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy.
Recent history shows intermittent gaps in confirmed U.S. diplomatic leadership in Belize. Michelle Kwan served as ambassador from December 2022 to January 2025, while Carlos Moreno held the post from 2014 to 2017, and Vinai Thummalapally served from 2009 to 2013. Moreno’s departure marked the start of a prolonged period without a confirmed ambassador, a situation that has periodically recurred.
