The Grenada Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (GSPCA), the island’s only animal shelter and registered non-profit animal welfare organisation, announces that it will temporarily close its veterinary clinic/shelter from 7 July 2026 due to the absence of a veterinarian, the need to source funding and to restructure its operations.
The GSPCA receives no government funding and is not funded by St George’s University. For years, the organisation has survived through the generosity of donors and the minimal income generated from its clinical services, allowing it to continue providing essential care to Grenada’s animals.
The growing number of abandoned litters and complex medical cases has placed increasing pressure on the organisation’s limited resources. In 2025 alone, the clinic treated over 5,400 patients, highlighting the critical role the GSPCA plays in the community.
The GSPCA has been an essential part of Grenada’s community for decades. Despite the clinic closure, the GSPCA will continue to care for the 90 animals currently under the shelter’s care.
The GSPCA remains committed to its mission, and the continued support of the local and international community through donations, volunteering, and responsible pet ownership is more important than ever. That being said, in order for the organisation to continue its efforts, it is in need of a broader and more permanent funding model.
The GSPCA is a vital part of Grenada, and together we can ensure it continues to serve the island’s animals for years to come, but it would require a commitment from governmental, local and international sources.
