Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer has joined the Principality’s commemorations marking the 70th anniversary of the wedding of Prince Rainier III and Grace Kelly in 1956, unveiling a photographic exhibition in the Casino de Monte-Carlo.
Titled “The Wedding of the Century in Monte-Carlo: 15 & 18 April 1956”, the display has is open to the public in the Casino’s Atrium until September 13. It forms part of a wider programme led by the Princely Palace, including a major exhibition at the Palace, a film lecture on July 20, and other cultural events across Monaco.
The Monte-Carlo installation draws on images from the Palace Archives, presented in collaboration with the Walter scenography studio. It focuses on key moments of the 1956 celebrations staged in SBM venues, particularly the International Sporting Club and the Opéra de Monte-Carlo inside the Casino.
Ten large-format photographs recreate the atmosphere of the era, including the gala dinner-show of April 15 and the glittering event held on April 18 at the Salle Garnier. That evening featured the premiere of Tribute to the Princess, staged in the historic opera house designed by Charles Garnier, with performances by the London Festival Ballet. Among the cast was prima ballerina Margot Fonteyn, with choreography by Michael Charnley and music by Stan Kenton.
The wedding itself, held on 19 April 1956 at Monaco Cathedral following the civil ceremony, was broadcast across Europe via Eurovision and viewed by an estimated 30 million people. It quickly earned the label “wedding of the century” and remains one of the most widely covered events in modern history.
SBM noted that its venues have long played a role in the Principality’s royal milestones. In 1976, the cellars of the Hôtel de Paris hosted celebrations for the couple’s 20th wedding anniversary. More recently, in 2019, following renovations, the hotel named its two flagship suites after Prince Rainier III and Princess Grace.
The exhibition is open daily from 10am with free admission.
