It is an unprecedented heat wavewhich hit Europe and thus also Switzerland in June. Heat records have fallen across the country. In Basel and Beznau AG, 39 degrees were measured on Saturday. In Zurich the thermometer rose to 36.3 degrees, setting a new all-time record. The extraordinary heat wave will come to an end on Sunday. In the lowlands, another 33 to 36 degrees are expected in the afternoon. There is currently no real cooling in sight for those suffering from the heat.
The weather will become more unstable as Sunday progresses. After a mostly dry start, heavy showers and thunderstorms appear, first over the mountains and later also in the lowlands. A few showers are possible in the morning, especially in northeastern Switzerland. Locally, the thunderstorms can bring large amounts of rain. Strong gusts of wind are also possible in their vicinity, as Meteo Switzerland forecasts.
It stays warm in summer
As the week begins, the temperatures drop, but it remains summery warm. On Monday it will reach around 28 degrees in the lowlands. The sun appears intermittently, but at the same time showers and thunderstorms develop again throughout the day. Initially the mountains are affected, later it can also become wet in the lowlands. Larger amounts of precipitation are possible locally.
The weather will remain changeable on Tuesday too. In addition to sunny periods, some heavy showers and thunderstorms will develop again in the afternoon. They first arise over the mountains and later spread to the lowlands. The maximum temperatures are again around 28 degrees. Strong gusts are possible near thunderstorms.
There will be cooling down on Wednesday
The changeable weather situation continues on Wednesday. It is often very cloudy, especially on the northern slopes of the Alps and in eastern Switzerland. Further rain showers and isolated thunderstorms can be expected there.
What is the best thing about cooling off for you?
Large amounts of rain may fall locally again. Things are expected to be friendlier in the Bern region and northwestern Switzerland. It stays dry in many places and the sun shows up more often. But the good news for everyone who wants to cool down a bit: temperatures only reach 22 to 26 degrees.
