Johannesburg (South Africa), June 30, 2026 (SPS) – South African political and trade union organizations participating in the National Committee meeting of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), held in Johannesburg, reaffirmed their unwavering support for the Sahrawi people’s just struggle for freedom and independence.
Speakers representing the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU), the African National Congress (ANC), and the South African Communist Party (SACP) unanimously underscored the legitimacy of the Sahrawi people’s struggle and their inalienable right to self-determination, independence, and freedom.
The Secretaries-General of the South African organizations condemned what they described as the illegal Moroccan military occupation of parts of the Sahrawi Republic, reaffirming their full support for the Sahrawi people’s struggle to complete the decolonization of Africa.
The National Committee meeting was attended by the Ambassador of the Sahrawi Republic to South Africa, Mr. Abba Al-Mad, the Secretary-General of the General Union of Sahrawi Workers (UGTSARIO), Mr. Nafie Ahmed Mohamed, and the Chairperson of the South African Solidarity Committee with the Sahrawi People, Ms. Dlamini.
The UGTSARIO Secretary-General is leading a trade union visit to South Africa, during which he met with COSATU leaders and participated in the proceedings of the 13th Congress of NEHAWU. The visit concluded with his participation in the meeting of the National Executive Committee of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM).
