The Office of the Attorney General is pleased to welcome Mr Christopher Lange back to Samoa as he is formally admitted to practise before the Supreme Court of Samoa.
Mr Lange is certainly no stranger to Samoa. His association with the Office of the Attorney General dates back almost two decades when he was admitted to practise in Samoa in 2007 under a New Zealand Crown Law capacity-building programme. During that time, he worked alongside lawyers within the Office, sharing his extensive litigation experience and helping strengthen the professional capabilities of government counsel.
Today marks not only his formal return to legal practice in Samoa, but also the continuation of a longstanding partnership dedicated to strengthening the legal profession and the administration of justice in Samoa.
Mr Lange returns as part of the Office’s two-year Capacity Building Programme, an initiative designed to further enhance the advocacy, litigation and legal advisory skills of lawyers within the Office of the Attorney General. Through this programme, our lawyers will receive practical mentoring, courtroom advocacy training, case management guidance and exposure to international best practice, ensuring that the Office continues to provide the highest standard of legal services to the Government and the people of Samoa.
Mr. Lange’s return represents far more than the arrival of an experienced lawyer. It is the continuation of a capacity-building partnership that has already left a lasting legacy within Samoa’s legal profession. The programme delivered in 2007 helped develop a generation of government lawyers whose skills and experience have, over the years, seen many progress into leadership positions across the public service, the judiciary, independent constitutional offices and private legal practice. We are proud to welcome Christopher Lange back as he once again invests in developing the next generation of lawyers who will continue to strengthen the rule of law and serve the people of Samoa.
The Attorney General also acknowledged the longstanding partnership between Samoa and New Zealand in supporting the development of Samoa’s justice sector. The relationship between Samoa and New Zealand has always extended beyond government-to-government cooperation. It is reflected in the willingness of highly respected legal practitioners such as Christopher to dedicate their time and expertise to mentoring our lawyers. These partnerships build institutional capability that benefits not only the Office of the Attorney General but the justice sector as a whole. We remain sincerely grateful for New Zealand lawyers continued commitment to building capacity of our lawyers in Samoa.
Mr Lange commenced the programme today with an intensive training session on the art of cross-examination, providing practical guidance on courtroom advocacy, witness examination and trial preparation. He also spoke to lawyers about the professional values expected of prosecutors, reminding them that their role is not to be persecutors, but administrators of justice. He emphasised that the duty of a prosecutor is to present cases fairly, objectively and independently, always seeking justice rather than simply securing convictions. The session reinforced that the true measure of a prosecutor is not the number of convictions obtained, but the integrity, fairness and professionalism with which they uphold the rule of law and serve the public interest.
