SIBU (April 22): The Magistrates’ Court here yesterday approved a four-day remand order against a cement truck driver involved in Tuesday’s fatal road accident at the traffic light intersection of Jalan Tun Ahmad Zaidi Adruce.
Magistrate Romario Jonoi allowed the remand application by police against the 50-year-old man until April 26 to facilitate investigations into the case.
Sibu police chief ACP Azari Miskon in a statement Tuesday said the accident occurred around 9.40am, involving a motorcycle and a cement truck.
He said initial investigations found that the motorcycle had stopped at the traffic light before moving when the light turned green, while the cement truck allegedly ran a red light and collided with it.
The 39-year-old motorcyclist, who was pinned underneath the truck, was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.
Police also confirmed that the driver was tested negative for drugs.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
Also investigating the incident is the Sarawak Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (CVLB), whose chairman Michael Kong on Tuesday said the company involved may have been linked to a previous incident.
Kong said the CVLB would not hesitate to take firm action against any operator found to be in breach of regulations or compromising the safety of road users.
