Researcher: A tough but honest life coach
Stephen Joyce is an associate professor at Aarhus University and, among other things, has dealt extensively with American media and political influence campaigns.
– Dr. Phil is one of the most famous personalities on American TV. His talk shows, which ran on the screen weekly for over 20 years, were surpassed only by Oprah Winfrey in viewership, says Stephen Joyce, who also notes that Dr. Phil for all those 20 years has stayed completely out of politics.
– His brand was to be a tough but honest life coach, and he never identified with either Republicans or Democrats. He also kept politics out of his show.
Over the past few years, Dr. However, Phil moved against President Trump and the MAGA movement, which has generally been very successful in bringing non-political media personalities into the conservative movement.
– The most well-known example of this is the podcast host Joe Rogan, and we are now seeing something similar with Dr. Phil, who began working more closely with the right-wing media when his show went off the air in 2023.
Propaganda for ICE
Immediately after his show was taken off the air, Dr. Phil’s production company Merit Street Media, which went bankrupt in 2025, largely due to the fact that the company produced features about the US immigration authorities ICE’s hunt for illegal immigrants, which generated massive criticism from ordinary Americans who wondered that he was making propaganda for the Trump administration.
– It was a real problem for Dr. Phil. People did not understand why he had gone in such a partisan direction, after being apolitical for more than 20 years, says Stephen Joyce, who estimates that Dr. Phil, with the new production company Envoy Media, is probably more aware that he must obtain financing, for example, by collaborating with a company such as Greenland Energy Company.

Part of an American influence campaign
Stephen Joyce estimates that Dr. Phil’s involvement in the American oil company must be seen as part of the American influence campaign, which, among others, Drew Horn and Tom Dans are also part of.
An influence campaign that is about splitting Greenland and Denmark, and selling the American population the idea that Greenland is a valuable area that the US should try to take over.
– Dr. Phil himself describes the TV series as a modern American treasure hunt in an unexplored area of the world with the oil executives as a kind of adventurers. It fits into the overall influence campaign that Greenland is something that the US should really take over because it is very valuable. And it is disturbing for Dr. Phil still has a high degree of credibility with the American population, says Stephen Joyce.
Drilling equipment on its way to Greenland
Greenland Energy Company recently announced that a ship with drilling equipment is scheduled to depart from Montreal, marking an important milestone in the planned drilling campaign.
The company has also announced business relationships with Halliburton, Stampede Drilling and IPT Well Solutions, in connection with the preparations for the first onshore drilling in Greenland, which must therefore be documented by Dr. Phil.
The Ministry of Natural Resources has not yet given permission for the company to do anything other than put the equipment ashore. They thus do not have permission to start drilling for oil.
