While the PUP waits on a decision that could determine whether Belize City sees a convention or a direct endorsement, the UDP is already gearing up for a political clash of its own in the old capital. At least two contenders have stepped forward for the party’s mayoral race, businessman and political analyst Damian Gough, and attorney Jaquelyn Willoughby. Gough, a longtime figure within the party, currently serves as Chair of the UDP’s Policy Committee, bringing years of experience in business and governance. Willoughby, on the other hand, built her name as a vocal trade unionist before entering the legal field, and she could make history as only the second woman to serve as Belize City’s mayor. Both candidates are aligned with Party Leader Tracy Panton, and a contested convention would be an early and critical test of the unity within her growing coalition.
