SIBU (April 22): Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng visited the bereaved family of the late Benet Kawit in Kampung Sentosa here today, offering condolences and calling for stronger enforcement against traffic violations following a fatal road accident.

Benet, 39, a single father from Belaga, was killed in an accident involving a cement truck and a motorcycle at the traffic light intersection of Jalan Tun Abang Zaidi Adruce here at about 9.40am on Tuesday.

During the visit, Chieng also presented a financial contribution to the family as a gesture of support.

“The deceased was a single father, leaving behind a 12-year-old son, Brayen Marcel Benet, and a 10-year-old daughter, Bratisya Mariazza Benet.

“Heartbreakingly, the accident occurred just a day before his daughter’s birthday. What was meant to be a simple and warm celebration has now become a painful memory the children will carry for life.

“He had promised to buy her Kentucky Fried Chicken to celebrate her birthday. But today, that promise can never be fulfilled,” he said in a statement.

Upon learning that it was the young girl’s birthday, Chieng personally arranged and delivered two KFC meal sets to the siblings in an effort to bring some comfort during their difficult time.

“Today should have been a joyful day, but it has turned into the saddest day for this family. This is not just an accident, it is a preventable tragedy,” he said.

Referring to the fatal crash, Chieng stressed that red-light violations have become a serious threat to road safety, calling for stricter legal consequences.

“Running a red light is not a minor mistake. It is an act that can cost lives. Anyone who disregards traffic rules must pay a heavy price,” he said.

He urged the Transport Ministry and enforcement authorities to take firmer action, including increasing fines, strengthening enforcement, and fully implementing automated enforcement systems to prevent similar tragedies.

Chieng also cited a statement by the Sarawak Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (CVLB), noting that preliminary checks indicated the company involved may have been linked to similar incidents in the past.

“If confirmed, this suggests that safety risks may have been long ignored, and there could be lapses in management.

“The authorities must conduct a thorough investigation and take the strictest action against any party that endangers public safety,” he said.

He emphasised that road safety must never be compromised, warning that negligence on the road can have devastating consequences.

“We cannot wait for another tragedy before taking action. Every life deserves to be protected,” he said.
