On Iceland’s National Day, there are few things that capture the national flavor as deliciously as the classic pear tart. For decades, it had a permanent place on national banquet tables, not least at children’s birthdays and confirmation parties, where it was considered a natural part of the coffee table.
Although the pear tart has been out of the limelight for a while, it has once again established itself among popular holiday cakes. In many ways, its revival reflects an increased interest in Icelandic food traditions and the cultural heritage associated with old and well-established party customs. In the same way that the national costume has gained more respect and visibility during the holidays, the pear tart has again become part of the atmosphere that many associate with the good old Iceland.
