After the World Cup match against Belgium, Iran’s soccer players left a message at the Los Angeles stadium stating their wish for “peace, respect and friendship to prevail among all nations.”
A handwritten note was left in their dressing room, after the draw with Belgium.
Iranian football players compete at the World Cup while their country is negotiating an end to the war with the United States of America, which is the co-organizer of the tournament along with Canada and Mexico.
“From ancient Persia thousands of years ago to civilized Iran today, the spirit of Iran remains alive and unwavering. We came to Los Angeles with pride, competed with honor and leave with dignity,” said a message published by the Iran Football Association, reported by the BBC today.
“Thank you Los Angeles for your hospitality. And thank you to every Iranian who gave their heart, voice and soul for Iran during these 180 minutes. May peace, respect and friendship prevail among all peoples,” the message said.
The message also mentions the attack on the girls’ school in Minab, where at least 168 people were killed on the first day of the war.
Iran also played its first match at the Mudniyal, a 2:2 draw with New Zealand, at the stadium in Los Angeles, and it will play its third and final match in the group stage against Egypt in Seattle on June 27.
