The Secretary of the Presidency, Alejandro Sánchezsaid that the Armed forces they will not deal with internal securitysomething for which they are not prepared, but they did affirm that The government seeks to use part of its infrastructure “for police work”.
Sánchez referred to the announcement made by the Minister of the Interior, Carlos Negro, in the Security Commission of the Chamber of Deputieswhere he maintained that his ministry and that of National Defense have “very advanced” an agreement for 12 armored SUVs of the National Army to support the Police in operations in dangerous neighborhoods.
“The government has announced where it has to announce things, which is in Parliament“said the Secretary of the Presidency in a press conference regarding the initiative that was announced.
“This is the same, the only thing that is going to be used is armored vehicles. It is not that the Armed Forces are going to take care of internal security because the Armed Forces are not prepared for internal security and are not trained for that.“Sanchez argued and added that the military’s mission is to “collaborate.”
“They can be very useful for police work in some neighborhoods when there are serious problems because many times drug trafficking does not throw stones, it throws bullets and we have to take care of the police and we have to take care of the people. That’s the way,” he said.
Regarding the way in which this support will be implemented, Sánchez stated that this It remains to be seen and will be part of the agreement that will be signed.
In that sense, he mentioned the possibility of there being training courses in case soldiers have to drive these vehicles during police operations and also of the eventual secondment of officials to the Ministry of the Interior.
“That could be perfectly true. The details of what the agreement will specifically be are being prepared by the two ministries. What we have is the firm decision to address the security problem in a comprehensive manner.”
