Rejoice, O young man, in your youth, and let your heart rejoice in the days of your youth. Follow the ways of your heart and the desires of your eyes. Know, however, that over all this God will summon you to judgment (Ecclesiastes, 11, 9). Ecclesiastes exhorts young people to rejoice in their green age, “because youth and black hair are a breath” (Ecclesiastes, 11, 10). As for the phrase on God’s judgement, it must be understood correctly: God will summon us to judgment for the goods that he has given us but which we have not been able to rejoice in. As we read in a beautiful rabbinical text: “Everyone will have to give an account of himself for everything that his eye has seen and that he has not eaten”, that is, for every pleasure that he has not been able to enjoy, for every sin of omission in the use …
