Success Story: One leg affected by polio, he used to sell bangles on the road, today he is an IAS, this story will beat the cinema too.

Kolkata: Ramesh Gorakh Gholap succeeded in one of the toughest exams in the country after overcoming poverty, physical handicaps and tough life tests one after another. A boy from a small village in Maharashtra’s Solapur district, Ramesh is today an IAS officer. But his path to this success was not easy at all.

Ramesh’s father ran a bicycle repair shop. The financial condition of the family was very poor. After his father’s illness, his mother Bimal Gholap took charge of the family. He used to go from village to village and sell bangles. Ramesh and his brother used to sell bangles from childhood to support their mother. Meanwhile, Ramesh’s left leg was also damaged due to polio.

The news of the death of the father, but there was no money for rent

The biggest shock came in Ramesh’s life when he was studying in class 12th. Father died. At that time he was out of the village for studies. To attend his father’s last rites, he needed only 2 taka fare to return home. But he did not have that money either. He was able to return home with the help of his neighbours. However, he sat in the exam without breaking down and scored 88.5 percent marks.

Dream of UPSC from teaching jobs

Ramesh took admission in D.Ed course and got a job as a teacher in 2009 after shouldering the family responsibilities. Also completed Bachelor of Arts degree through distance education. But he had a big dream in his mind – to work for the society from the top of the administration. Seeing the suffering of common people in government offices, he decided that he must become an IAS officer.

First time failed, second time was a fluke

In 2010, Ramesh failed the UPSC exam for the first time. But did not give up. Quit job and started full time studies. And that hard work paid off in 2012. He fulfilled his dream of becoming IAS by achieving All India Rank 287 in UPSC Civil Services Examination. Also set a record by securing first position in Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) in the same year.

An inspiration to many young people today

Even after becoming an IAS, Ramesh Gholap did not forget his roots. He visited various places to motivate the youth and advise them on preparation for competitive exams. His life proves that no matter how difficult the circumstances, with willpower and perseverance success is possible.
