PARAMARIBO — Transvaal achieved an important victory over direct competitor Notch in the Suriname Major League on Sunday evening. A goal from Jercinio Grendel ultimately proved to be enough for the full spoils; 1-0.
Thanks to the victory, Transvaal strengthens its position in fifth place with 29 competition points. The difference with Notch, which is one place lower, has increased to seven points.
Notch started the match strongly and had most of the ball in the opening phase. The team from Moengo created some good chances, but failed to convert them into goals.
As the match progressed, Transvaal got better into its game. Where Notch failed to score, the green and white did strike. Two youth players played an important role in the only goal of the evening. Cherano Esajas passed his direct opponent with a nice feint and delivered a tight cross, which was cleverly tapped in by Grendel; 1-0.
After the opening goal, Transvaal gained more control of the match and several opportunities followed to extend the lead. However, the ending left much to be desired. In addition, Notch goalkeeper Marvoer Hupsel had a strong game, which limited the damage.
At the other end, Lloyd Donk had an excellent opportunity to level the score, but he shot straight into the goalkeeper’s hands from close range.
In the second half both teams kept each other in balance. Although chances arose on both sides, the score remained unchanged.
With this victory, Transvaal is doing excellent business in the battle for a play-off spot. Notch, on the other hand, sees the competition getting further ahead and ends up in more difficult waters.
