Parliament: Against DISY – AKEL for presidencies

The Democratic Alarm accused AKEL of being the “single dissonance” in the consultation and consensus in the Parliament on the presidencies of parliamentary committeesclaiming that he tried to force his own point of view on everyone.

In its announcement, DISY states that the AKEL went on a “new delirium”, misinforming, as he claims, society, personally targeting the Speaker of the House and distorting the facts.

Democratic Alarm notes that it came to the Selection Committee today in a spirit of consensus, stressing that for the party the priority is the start of Parliament’s work. “If everyone behaved like AKEL, the Parliament would be left on ice,” he says characteristically.

According to the announcement, DISY expressed a principled position in favor of respecting the Constitution, the Rules of Procedure of the Parliament and the popular verdict. At the same time, he notes that he did not insist on claiming an additional committee presidency, which, as he states, “logically he should have claimed”, in order to facilitate the process.

DISY emphasizes that in a compromise no one can claim to be exclusively theirs and that no party has achieved what it sought from the beginning.

In conclusion, he accuses AKEL that, instead of contributing to the effort, it has again chosen “toxicity, intense confrontation and conspiracy”, calling on it to understand that the elections are over and that citizens expect the parties to focus on their parliamentary work.

Loukaidis reports on Anita, DISY and ELAM

Earlier, AKEL’s Parliamentary Representative Giorgos Loukaidis said that “for the first time we have not been able to reach a consensual solution to the distribution of the presidencies, not through AKEL’s fault”. “On the contrary, we showed all the good will and will without claiming anything more than what we had in the previous parliamentary term, but unfortunately we were faced with a scenario that had been formed in advance and which was led by the Speaker of the Parliament, Mrs. Dimitriou,” he added.

Mr. Loukaidis said that “it is sad and tragic, if not laughable, because we saw the continuation of what we experienced with the Presidency of the Parliament” and added that “Ms. Dimitriou should be ready to give everything, not just to DIKO, but also to ELAM, based on the same objectives and in the same way that we saw this theater of the absurd develop with the Presidency of the Parliament”.

He mentioned that they have given the Defense Committee to ELAM, as he wanted, as he claimed and as he vetoed, because every veto, as he said, “that ELAM put in the Selection Committee was immediately accepted by Mrs. Dimitriou and it is possible that we will see Christos Christou President of the Defense Committee”.

He referred to “damage to Cyprus as well and the possibility of exploitation that will be experienced by the Turkish side from such a presidency” and to “trampsters, as does not happen in any other European country, who do not accept that there is climate change, to chair the Environment Committee”, which they have given to ELAM together with the Transport Committee.

He also said that “Mrs. Dimitriou has also fully satisfied the requests of DIKO on the basis of the give and take that she has done with both parties” and added that the three parties together agreed before we entered into a debate and imposed them despite our own disagreement and despite the fact that this damages the place, she does not at all respect the proportions as they emerged through the popular verdict and the percentages of parties”.

He mentioned that AKEL has five presidencies and added that “to satisfy the wishes of ELAM and DIKO, Mrs. Dimitriou has given these two parties six presidencies”.

He also stated that it has not been respected “and what we emphasized from the beginning and supposedly we all agreed, to reduce the Committees in order to achieve a larger and more cheerful functioning of the Parliament, because committees coincide at the same times and MPs must be in two committees at the same time”.

“They didn’t come out with a smaller number of committees, what they planned and wanted to impose, so they kept the number at 16 committees,” he added.

Asked to comment on information that AKEL insisted too much on the chairmanship of the Environment Committee and that ELAM was willing to take the chairmanship of the Human Rights Committee from ELAM, Mr. Loukaidis said that AKEL knew that “the other parties had agreed and that even without agreement they would give chairmanships to ELAM and would not follow the model of other countries”.

“What we tried tooth and nail and even though they had us from the outside and did what they had pre-decided and imposed, we tried to help the country by making creative suggestions that did not concern us, so that ELAM would only get technical committees, not to get committees that are politically and ideologically charged, that will do damage to society, that may seriously expose our country to lurking opponents”, he said. he added that they did the same for the Defense Committee and for the Environment and for the Human Rights and Institutions Committee.

He said that “it is not conceivable and it is not logical to give them to a party that is a threat to human rights, to the rule of law – and the extreme right is like that not only in Cyprus and in Europe and in the world – you give them to the extreme right and to ELAM”.

He also said that the Greek Government does not accept ELAM to meet together and added that AKEL tried to help “until the last moment so that Defense does not go to ELAM and goes to DIKO and stays with ELAM Control”, adding that ELAM “vetoed and Mrs. Dimitriou followed what ELAM wanted”.

“Tragic and all this, not only in relation to the give and take that took place for the Presidency of the Parliament, but also against the background of the aspirations for the presidential elections”, he concluded.
