The Club of Deputies of Democratic Montenegro submitted to the parliamentary procedure the Proposal to amend the Labor Law, which introduces the right to an extended weekend once a month, with the aim of further improving the rights of employees and raising the quality of working life in Montenegro.

Democrat MP, Duško Stjepović, announced that this legal solution will mean that employees in Montenegro will have the right to a free Friday before the last weekend of the month, which together with that weekend will mean an officially extended weekend once a month.

“In the Labor Law, after article 76, a new article 76a is added, which reads: “extended weekend once a month”. In the week preceding the last weekend of the month, the employee has the right to a non-working Friday, that is, to a 24-hour holiday that is used on Friday, to which the holiday from article 76 of this law is added, and is used continuously,” said Stjepović at the press conference.

As Stjepović announced, this solution represents a modern and responsible step forward in the field of labor rights, aimed at preserving the physical and mental health of employees, strengthening the balance between business and private life, as well as creating conditions for greater motivation and productivity in the workplace.

“Modern research confirms that longer vacation periods contribute to reducing stress and professional burnout, increase employee satisfaction and have a positive effect on work efficiency. That is why we believe that the state is obliged to continue improving labor rights standards and follow modern trends in work organization,” said Stjepović.

The Club of Democrats points out that the proposed measure can have significant social and economic benefits through the strengthening of family ties, greater participation of citizens in cultural, sports and social activities, as well as an additional boost to domestic tourism and the local economy.

They stated that the proposed solution is standardized in a clear and predictable way, which enables employers to plan work processes and organize business activities in a timely manner.

“Work productivity is not measured solely by the number of hours spent at work, but by the quality of work, the focus of employees and the efficiency of work organization. This is precisely why we believe that an extended weekend will contribute to greater productivity and better organization of work processes,” said Stjepović.

He said that they submitted that legal solution to the procedure, but as every time until now when it came to other solutions that are the product of their legislative initiative, they are very ready to improve it with their coalition partners from the government and to make that modern step forward in the field of workers’ rights together.

“Also, we expect this proposal to be considered and expressed by the social partners, the Government, trade unions and employers, not only because it is an obligation whenever the Labor Law is changed, but because it is normal because it applies to them and they will apply it,” concluded Stjepović.
