Prime Minister Hun Manet said he reiterated Cambodia’s position on border issues with Thailand during an informal meeting with Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul on the sidelines of the ASEAN-Russia Commemorative Summit in Kazan, Russia.
According to Mr Hun Manet, Cambodia remains committed to the peaceful resolution of border issues with Thailand in accordance with international law.
On maritime boundaries, the Prime Minister said both countries should continue participating in the compulsory conciliation process under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), in which Cambodia and Thailand are already engaged.
Regarding the land border, Mr Hun Manet said Cambodia continues to favour the existing bilateral mechanism, the Joint Boundary Commission (JBC), in line with existing agreements between the two countries.
“However, Cambodia urges Thailand to appoint its JBC chief and to begin joint survey and demarcation work as soon as possible,” he said, referring to Point 3 of the Joint Statement signed by Cambodia and Thailand on December 27, 2025.
Mr Hun Manet noted that Cambodia’s position on the opening of land border crossings remains unchanged, adding that there was “no need to talk at this time” about the matter.
The informal discussion took place during the Prime Minister’s visit to the Russian Federation for the ASEAN-Russia Commemorative Summit marking the 35th anniversary of ASEAN-Russia relations.
