During renovation of the property on Skeppsholmen in Stockholm, the Swedish Property Board replaced an elevator, requiring all objects and exhibitions to be taken down.
At the same time, the newly renovated museum is under threat of closure. If the Swedish Museums of World Culture do not receive compensation for a projected 57 percent rent increase, museum management is threatening to terminate the lease agreement and close both the East Asian and Mediterranean Museums.
This autumn, the East Asian Museum will open with an exhibition about the Chinese artist Qi Baishi (1864–1957). It will also show an exhibition about Asian cultural heritage – “In Our Lives”.
