The new clinic on the day of the handover
The University of Szeged (SZTE) officially opened its new gynecology outpatient clinic and its fetal diagnostics and prenatal care center on Tuesday. The 150-million-forint project (412,000 euros) was funded entirely by the university’s own resources.
Rector László Rovó said at the event that the university’s model change provides SZTE with the resources necessary to carry out the developments required for high-quality healthcare in the Southern Great Plain region.
The professor of medicine mentioned, among these, the recently completed modernization of the oncology department at the Szentes Hospital, as well as the development of cardiology and oncology care in Szeged. Among research-related investments, he highlighted the establishment of one of the world’s most advanced cryo-electron microscopy centers.
Judit Fendler, Chancellor of the University of Szeged, recalled that following the university’s arrival in Szeged in the 1920s, four basic clinics—internal medicine, surgery, gynecology, and pediatrics—each with a floor area of approximately 10,000 square meters, were built.

she added.

To date, the former surgical clinic has been reconstructed with an investment of approximately 9 billion forints (24.7 million euros); the building now houses the Banga Ilona Health Sciences Training Center.
In the other clinic buildings, improvements are being made on a piecemeal basis, tailored to the needs of patient care. In recent years, 8 billion forints (22 million euros) have been invested in the pediatric clinic, but the exterior renovation of the building is still pending.
At the gynecology clinic, a new neonatal intensive care unit has been established.
On the ground floor of the building, the new gynecology outpatient clinic, as well as the fetal diagnostics and prenatal care center, have been completed with an investment of approximately 150 million forints, the chancellor announced.
Clinic Director Szabolcs Várbíró explained that the
more than 500-square-meter space will house all general and specialized gynecological outpatient clinics, as well as provide prenatal care and fetal genetic ultrasound diagnostics.
Thanks to the development, all of the clinic’s outpatient care units—which see an average of 200–250 patients daily—have been consolidated into a single location, simplifying the patient journey.
Patients will be welcomed at the new location starting in the second half of April. The clinic’s new operating suite will be built on the site of the former outpatient clinics; design work will begin this year, and construction is set to start next year, the professor announced.
