Cambodia’s acting head of state reflected yesterday on the 51st anniversary of a combat injury that cost him his left eye during the country’s civil war.
In a social media post, Mr Hun Sen recalled being wounded at about 6am on April 16, 1975.
He said that at this hour five decades ago, he remained unconscious due to the severity of his injuries.
“The unit under my direct command suffered 38 casualties, including myself as the commander,” Mr Hun Sen stated. “I was fortunate to survive, but nearly 30 of my comrades had already made the ultimate sacrifice.”
The former prime minister described the brutality of the conflict as a lesson for the future.
“This is the nature of war, and it is something we never wish to encounter again,” he added.
Acting Head of State Hun Sen concluded his message with New Year greetings and blessings, wishing the nation continued peace and prosperity.
