Union Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Dr Soe Win, together with Bago Region Chief Minister U Myo Swe Win, visited Gyobingauk and Zigon townships in Bago Region yesterday morning to make assistance to households affected by strong winds that struck on 17 April.
At a ceremony held at the General Administration Department hall in Gyobingauk Township, they provided cash assistance, rice subsidies and hygiene kits to affected households from wards and village-tracts in both townships. In Zigon Township, assistance was provided for 10 collapsed houses, 375 damaged houses and five monasteries, benefiting 1,554 people. In Gyobingauk Township, support covered 57 collapsed houses, 639 damaged houses and eight monasteries, benefiting 2,205 people.
During the visit, the Union Minister met affected residents and highlighted that strong winds commonly occur between late March and early June, causing damage to homes, monasteries and schools each year.
He stressed the importance of disaster preparedness and ongoing public awareness measures being carried out in cooperation with relevant ministries and local authorities to reduce losses.
He also urged the public to remain vigilant against seasonal natural hazards such as strong winds, heavy rain, lightning and flash floods, and to take necessary preventive measures.
Total assistance provided for the affected areas, including previous support, amounted to K91.869 million for 67 households. — MNA/KZL
