PARAMARIBO — Gold miners JP (25) and EM (22) were injured on Saturday evening around 9 p.m. after they became buried under eroded sand during gold mining work at 21 Bergie in the Matawai area. The Brownsweg police were informed about the incident around eleven o’clock in the evening by the nursing staff of the Medical Mission outpatient clinic.
The preliminary police investigation has shown that after a sand erosion, one of the victims ended up partially buried in the sand, while the other was completely buried. With the help of other gold seekers, both men were able to be freed from their dire position. They were then transported on their own to the outpatient clinic of the Medical Mission.
Upon arrival, law enforcement officers found the two victims in serious condition at the Medical Mission. Both men were unresponsive and were immediately transferred for further medical treatment to the Emergency Department of the University Hospital Paramaribo, where they were admitted.
Police visited the victims in hospital on Sunday. JP was now responsive again, but complained of pain all over his body. EM, who had seven ribs broken, was unresponsive at the time and was on a ventilator.
