Around 250 people have staged a third demonstration at the site of a planned asylum seekers’ shelter in Den Bosch, where police made two arrests last week after officers were pelted with stones.
Monday night’s protest on the Beverspijken industrial estate, which borders the village of Engelen, broke up after police stopped the demonstrators occupying a roundabout that had been the focus of last Thursday’s clashes.
The protesters waved Dutch flags and banners with slogans such as “Will your child be able to cycle here safely?” at the site, as police on horseback and in vans stood by, but did not intervene.
Last Thursday riot police moved in when a group of around 50 demonstrators ignored an order to keep away from the roundabout.
The protest took place while the council was holding a community information evening in the building, which has been earmarked as an accommodation facility for 50 asylum seekers aged 15 to 18.
Two people were arrested, one for allegedly throwing stones at police, while fireworks were thrown. The council said stones were also thrown at the building.
The first protest was held last Tuesday, when demonstrators attempted to occupy the A59 motorway, which runs past the site.
Local mayor Jack Mikkers issued banning orders against 11 people over the weekend, prohibiting them from setting foot on the De Vutter industrial estate until 7am on Tuesday.
