According to the latest official data published by the Spanish Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, Morocco remains the leading country of origin for foreign workers affiliated to Social Security, with nearly 420,000 people.
Morocco remains the first country of origin of foreign workers affiliated to Social Security in Spain, with nearly 420,000 people, ahead of Romania (355,087), Colombia (291,371) and Venezuela (231,635), according to official data published Friday by the Spanish Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration. In a press release, the ministry specifies that in total, foreign workers represent 14.7% of those affiliated to Social Security, with a particularly marked presence in the hotel industry (30.4%), agriculture (28.8%) and the construction and public works sector (25.1%). Employment of foreign nationals increased by 288,717 affiliates year-on-year, after a monthly increase of 111,301 people. According to the Spanish ministry, this development was mainly driven by the agriculture and hospitality sectors. The rate of growth of foreign employment stood at 9.4%, compared to 2.5% for the labor market as a whole.
“Foreign workers constitute an essential engine of economic growth and are present in all sectors,” said the Minister of Inclusion, Elma Saiz, quoted in the press release, highlighting their contribution particularly in the hotel industry, construction and agriculture. In May, the largest increases were recorded in agriculture, followed by hospitality, public administration, sports, arts and entertainment, and administrative and support services. By origin, almost 30% of foreign affiliates come from European Union countries, the rest coming from third countries.
