The citizen service app ID Austria has received new functions: Mobile use of powers of attorney is now supported. For the first time, users can log in to digital services via mobile devices on behalf of someone else. With the latest update, the digital ID platform “eIDs” can now also be accessed directly from the app’s start screen. From the end of July 2026, an AI-based chatbot called “ida” will also be available.
The “relaunch” that the responsible state secretary Alexander Pröll (ÖVP) presented in a press conference on Thursday, simplifying administrative procedures for families, relatives, companies and professional representatives. For example, the mobile power of attorney makes it possible to pick up medication for relatives. However, the prerequisite is that both people must register with ID Austria.
Also new is a link to the digital ID cards integrated in the ID Austria app, but these still open separately. So both applications will remain in place for the time being. But there will be no proliferation of citizen service apps, emphasized Pröll. He is pursuing the long-term goal of merging several apps into one in the future.
The chatbot “ida”, in turn, will be present both in the app and on websites such as oesterreich.gv.at from the end of July this year. Digital assistance is intended as a first step for further AI-based services in administration. In future expansion stages, “ida” will not only inform citizens, but also support them with digital administrative procedures – upon express request and with clear approval.
Pröll was also able to report that it has now broken the six million mark among ID Austria users. In order to promote further dissemination, a service tour will take place again in July and August. (APA)
