The paralysis It is part of a series of mobilizations promoted by the union to demand a greater allocation of resources for public education within the framework of the budget discussion that the country is going through.

This Thursday’s day will mark the closing of a week of staggered measures that began with zonal strikes in different neighborhoods of Montevideo.

A strike that reaches all public schools in the capital

The call made by Ades provides for the suspension of activities throughout the day in Montevideo public high schools.

The measure comes after three days of partial strikes organized by areas.

On Monday, the high schools in the west of Montevideo and Prado were affected. On Tuesday the measures reached educational centers in the east and northeast of the capital. Finally, on Wednesday the strikes were concentrated in the high schools in the Central and northern areas.

With the general strike this Thursday, the impact will extend to all public secondary schools in Montevideo.

In addition, the week will have a new interruption the next day, since Friday, June 19, will be a working holiday to commemorate a new anniversary of the birth of José Artigas.

    What Ades claims

As explained by the union, the measures seek to include teachers’ demands in the budget discussion and pressure for greater investment in public education.

Among the main demands is the historic slogan promoted by the teaching unions of allocating the equivalent of 6% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for education plus an additional 1% for research and development.

Ades maintains that the education system needs more resources to respond to current challenges and improve teaching and learning conditions.

In addition to the general increase in the budget, the union demands greater investments in educational infrastructure.

Teachers maintain that it is necessary to allocate more resources to improve the building conditions of the study centers and address different needs linked to the daily functioning of the schools.

Another of the proposals refers to the creation of new teaching positionsas well as the strengthening of socio-educational teams that work with students and families within educational centers.
